Coastal Interior Design For New Construction
Three. Whole. Years. That’s how long we’ve been planning, designing, and building our R Street new construction beach house. Our clients moved in this past May (finally!), and we’re putting the final touches on it. We just installed final art and small furniture, and finished photography is scheduled for Spring 2025. All exterior architecture designed by Owen Thomas, and all interior architectural design (and decorating) by Boston interior designer Sarah Scales. Before we go into details, check out our services here. Below, dive into a preview of this South Shore beach retreat.
A Simple Structure That Maximizes Livable Square Feet
From the very first glance, this custom home design makes a statement with its clean, timeless exterior. Just 40 yards from the shoreline, the crisp white board and batten siding provides a fresh, classic look. The simple white exterior contrasts beautifully with sleek black windows. Red cedar accents peek out from other angles, adding warmth and texture. The standing seam metal roof promises durability against the seaside elements. And with the entire structure elevated one story above grade, this home is ready for whatever coastal weather throws its way—no worries about flooding.
A Breezy Blend of Natural Beauty and Modern Interior Design
In the kitchen and sunroom, natural materials take the spotlight. The soft tones of the kitchen design feature matte natural oak floors and matching custom kitchen cabinets. The continuous oak finish creates a calm and cohesive feel. White cylinder lights, placed between painted beams, add a clean and modern touch without overwhelming the space. The sunroom has custom fir cabinets, white shiplap walls, and subtle nautical lighting. Each room’s custom millwork design offers a subtle texture or something interesting on the walls or ceilings – allowing the interior design itself to be more humble. A soapstone countertop, a built-in beverage station, and 11 windows showcasing the neighborhood and ocean views make this space ready for laid-back dinner parties at the custom oak farm table.
Smart Design in Small Spaces – Space Planning Services
In the guest bedrooms, we considered every inch, thoughtfully. Soft lilac walls create a peaceful atmosphere in one room, while custom white closet units take the place of traditional drywall closets to maximize space. With two full beds in each space, saving even a few inches made a big difference, and these cabinet-style closets allowed us to make the most of the small footprint. The shared bath features a rich navy blue wall tile that adds depth and contrast, while a separate guest bathroom boasts striking black fixtures paired with textured zellige tiles. Both spaces combine practicality with subtle and impactful design choices. A simple and coastal interior design that’s kid- and guest-proof (the best part).
Timeless Details in the Primary Suite and Attic Bunk Room – Custom Millwork Design
The primary bath design is a mix of subtle but strong elements. White, grey, and black geometric mosaic tiles on the floor provide a quiet but interesting foundation. Custom oak vanities with black honed countertops and matching sinks bring both warmth and contrast. Polished nickel sconces and simple medicine cabinets add just the right amount of shine, and maintain a clean and classic aesthetic.
Up in the attic bunk room, we maximized space with custom bunk beds designed to sleep six. Accommodating two queen beds and two twin beds – you can fit an entire family up here… or just jam all the kiddos together. Polished nickel nautical lighting adds a practical, utilitarian touch. The attic bath continues the streamlined design, with simple striped tiles that make a statement without overpowering the space.

We’re thrilled to be working with Nat Rea, a talented photographer from Rhode Island, who will be capturing these finished spaces—just as he did with the stunning exteriors of this home. Our goal is to get this project featured in print, but while we wait on that, enjoy these iPhone shots as a sneak peek. Keep your eyes peeled (and fingers crossed) for a potential spring or summer feature (2026), and we can’t wait to share the full story soon!
