Coastal Interior Design with Purpose
As a New England interior designer, I often find myself ferry-hopping to Martha’s Vineyard, channeling my inner “Coastal Design Adventurer.” In Edgartown—a historic Massachusetts gem—I’ve tackled projects that capture the region’s charm. This particular beach house, a white-walled blank canvas on the water, was transformed into a cheerful, welcoming retreat. Tight budget? Check. Impossible timeline? Check. Logistical nightmares? Triple check. But we pulled it off just in time for summer renters to enjoy their waterfront escape.
Work-From-Home Space & Family Room: The Fan Favorites
The office is a serene retreat with soft blue walls and a sleek waterfall-edge desk, perfectly designed to elevate the work-from-home experience. Paired with lounge chairs, it’s the nice balance of comfort and utility… and, its Zoom camera friendly. Meanwhile, the family room screams cozy with its deep purple walls, an original cobblestone fireplace, and a durable Kravet sectional. A cute collection of prints from a New England-based artist sits just above the seat back. The pièce de résistance: a whimsical mermaid sculpture discovered on Nantucket now graces the mantel, as if she’s silently judging the TV-watching habits below.
Guest Bedrooms: Coastal Charm with a Side of Bed Counts
Guest bedrooms are where form meets function (read: as many beds as possible)… this is a rental, after all. Vintage and modern pieces mingle in hues of soft greens and blues, creating restful retreats. Custom pillows, floral bedding, and curated decor make these spaces scream “coastal comfort.” It’s all about giving guests a space to unpack, unwind, and—most importantly—sleep peacefully.
Subtle Meets Statement: A Home by the Water
In the breakfast nook, upholstered wood chairs gather around a vintage table from Chairish, proving (subtle) texture and simplicity can coexist perfectly. Meanwhile, the dining room goes bold with black farm chairs and a geometric rug, tying the space together. One dramatic guest room sports hunter green walls and louvered shades. Every choice, down to the smallest accent, connects to the waterfront (but also New England) vibe, keeping it stylish and functional.
Why This Project Matters (Even If It Won’t Win Awards)
This house may not grace magazine covers, but it’s a masterclass in turning an empty shell into a vibrant home with personality and purpose. Whether we’re working in Edgartown, Cape Cod, or Boston, the goal is always the same: create timeless, practical spaces that honor their surroundings. And yes, they’re livable too—because what’s a vacation house without a little sand on the floor?
