Inside Our Project: Luxury Upholstery & Custom Pillows

We’re thrilled to share a collection of luxury textiles & custom pillows included in our latest project in New York City. These bespoke pieces—small upholstered side chairs and unique throw pillows—feature materials from our favorite fabric houses. Some from domestic sources, others from Europe and beyond, but all celebrate the art of textile design. Rich colors, striking patterns, and intricate details bring personality to our Lenox Hill apartment project – starting with the textiles. Let’s take a closer look at the fabric details.

Walter G, Luxor/Saffron

For the primary bedroom, we transformed a modern side chair (brought from the client’s previous home) into something special. We selected Walter G’s block linen print fabric, Luxor, in the vibrant color Saffron—a deep, maize-like shade perfect for the room’s pastel palette. To add contrast, we included woven trim by Samuel & Sons, using their San Marino cord with tape in Blue Jay, a blend of white, navy, and blue threads. The trim beautifully breaks up the yellow floral print on the seat cushion. The end result is one-of-a-kind: a refreshed chair featuring a vintage-inspired textile and a contrasting trim that feels intentionally mismatched in the best way. Fans of color theory will appreciate the classic yellow and blue pairing (complementary colors). Together, the selections highlight the chair’s rounded seat and elegantly curved back.

Caroline Irving, Siam/Shell

Also in the primary bedroom, we chose Caroline Irving’s Siam linen textile in Shell—a soft, delicate pink tone. We love throwing these 48″ x 12″ pillows onto a king sized bed. First, the dimensions feel special; definitely not something you’d find off-the-shelf at HomeGoods. The long shape feels chic, and the luxury fabric elevates the look. A well-made bed might feel unattainable, but a carefully chosen pillow easily makes everything feel put together. Finally, this print feels ultra-feminine—exactly what we love.

Pierre Frey, Socoa/Praline

Next up, two 36″ x 12″ pillows perfect for twin beds in the kids’ room. This fabric from Pierre Frey is indoor-outdoor, meaning it’s extra durable and cleanable—ideal for children. The textile mixes pinkish-red fibers woven with off-white and light grey threads. Kiddos rarely make beds perfectly, so a beautiful yet practical pillow tidies things up quickly… Luxury upholstery and custom pillows can be just as at home in kids’ spaces.

Christopher Farr Cloth, Temple/Green

In another kids’ bedroom, we created two 24″ x 12″ pillows using Christopher Farr Cloth’s Temple fabric in green. This geometric textile combines vivid green and blue hues. Striking black piping from Samuel & Sons adds contrast against the light beige background of the fabric. Trim details matter—sometimes we use a self-welt, sometimes a separate trim. And Samuel & Sons, a niche brand focused solely on decorative trims, always gets it right.

Helene Blanche, Painted Stripe Linen/Forest

Another small upholstered chair matches the original side chair’s frame used earlier. This time, in the boy’s bedroom, we chose Helene Blanche’s striped linen fabric in bright green, black, and white. We also repeated the Samuel & Sons blue tape trim. Small repeated details create subtle but meaningful cohesion throughout the apartment.

Alice Sargent, Najwa/Tobacco & Zak & Fox, Sayat/01

For the dining room, we selected Alice Sargent’s Najwa fabric in Tobacco, a floral motif with a country-inspired feel. The small-scale pattern, earthy linen texture, and warm colorway blend perfectly with neutral pillows and black furniture elsewhere in the space. A flange edge adds a charming, frilly detail. Below it, a single pillow features Zak + Fox Sayat fabric in colorway 01. This woven textile combines golden-yellow threads with soft beige and white. Altogether, these comfy pillows enhance our dining room space. In a NYC apartment, dining rooms often multitask—as an office, breakfast nook, puzzle table, or game spot…. so these pillows will be used!

Pierre Frey, Saqqarah/Terre Cuite & Zebulon/Eucalyyptus

Two additional pillow designs complete the custom selections for this apartment. First, Pierre Frey’s Saqqarah fabric in rich maroon cut velvet. Look closely, and you’ll see layers of black, brown, neutral, pink, and burgundy threads. We love the geometric, checkered pattern formed by these colors, as well as the variation in texture; velvet mixed with strié. Velvet always feels luxurious, and these pillows are no exception. Finally, a pair of teal blue pillows (24″ x 12″) use Pierre Frey’s Zebulon fabric in Eucalyptus. This loose, open-weave linen offers impressive texture and features embroidery in white, pink, red, and black. These two textiles connect the entire palette of the apartment—deep burgundy from other pillows in the living room, and pink as seen in the primary bedroom.

Luxury Upholstery & Custom Pillows

We’re designers—we adore luxury upholstery & custom pillows, beautiful textiles, and handcrafted details. But what inspires us most is the art of mixing from different resources. For this pillow and chair project alone, we pulled custom upholstery fabrics from eight distinct fabric houses.

1. Walter G: Australian textile brand known for hand-printed fabrics inspired by global travels, combining traditional techniques with modern aesthetics.
2. Caroline Irving: New York-based textile designer celebrated for artisan-inspired, soft linens with intricate, subtle patterns and classic European charm.
3. Pierre Frey: French fabric house renowned for luxurious textiles, innovative patterns, and artistry iconic in traditional and contemporary interiors.
4. Helene Blanche: Danish design studio offering sophisticated, handcrafted textiles characterized by timeless stripes, elegant colors, and Scandinavian simplicity.
5. Christopher Farr Cloth: London-based fabric house recognized for bold graphic prints, vibrant colors, and contemporary takes on traditional textile designs.
6. Samuel & Sons: New York-based niche brand specializing exclusively in high-quality decorative trims, cords, fringes, and upholstery detailing.
7. Zak & Fox: New York textile company blending historical narratives with modern design, creating intricate patterns, nuanced colorways, and global influences.
8. Alice Sargent: Boutique Connecticut fabric studio known for small-scale, nature-inspired motifs printed on fine linen, offering refined country elegance.

The furniture (beyond these small side chairs) comes from an even broader range of vendors. Blending all these elements into one unified, cohesive home poses real challenges… exactly the type of challenge we love. Each design is unique, impossible to replicate, stamped by us but always reflective of our clients—her favorite colors, personal art collection, and preferred shapes and details. With final photography approaching, we can’t wait to share the finished space soon.
