Designing a Stowe Ski Retreat: A Look Inside
If you’ve ever been to Stowe, Vermont, you know this charming town buzzes with energy, especially during ski season. From mountain adventures to après-ski fun, it’s everything you want from a quintessential New England escape. As an interior designer who works in Vermont, I love creating spaces that reflect this vibrant yet cozy lifestyle. In Part I of this series, we toured the main living areas of our Stowe ski house design, including the entry, living, dining, kitchen, and family rooms—plus a peek at the primary suite. Now, let’s venture downstairs to explore the kids’ spaces and some playful details.
A Basement Built for Fun
The basement is where things get rowdy—in the best way. A black speckled fabric sectional anchors the room, paired with custom ottomans upholstered in our favorite Zak + Fox hunter green stripes. A plaid wool Roman shade adds a rustic touch, and we sprinkled in custom green pillows (because mixing fabrics is too much fun). In the guest bath, wood paneling meets bold, blue geometric wallpaper (yes, Zak + Fox again—we might need an intervention).
And then, our favorite part: the bunk room. Custom millwork painted a deep green creates two queen beds and two twin beds, seamlessly integrated with woodwork. A geometric wallpaper brings energy to the space, while watercolor art from a family friend and a reupholstered vintage daybed (a grandmother’s piece reimagined in cheerful yellow stripes) add personal charm. Modern sconces from Anglepoise complete the look.
