Off-white custom kitchen cabinets with artisan off-white backsplash tile and a brass Urban Electric double beaded wall sconce in a traditional kitchen design.

We’ve designed countless kitchens—some modern, some traditional—all beautiful in their own way. After years of experience, we’ve rounded up the five features that best suit a classic New England kitchen. These details work well in at coastal properties, a farmhouse, or any home with historic or traditional architecture. These ideas will keep it both livable and aligned with the character of the Northeast.

A classic Boston kitchen design in a Winchester home with light green cabinets, reclaimed oak shelving, and a locally made wood and metal island.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s talk kitchens—the heart of the home. As a Boston kitchen designer, I’ve tackled some pretty unforgettable projects. Some are fresh, others historic, and a few date back to my earliest work. While some of these projects no longer grace my portfolio, they hold a special place in my design journey. Let’s dive into some standout spaces from a collection of our work.

A Boston kitchen designer crafted light grey cabinets with a navy island, butcher block counters, and a vintage red and navy runner in a brownstone kitchen.

Investing in custom cabinets pays off in any renovation or new build. While semi-custom and off-the-shelf options might seem budget-friendly, they often come with design limits and gaps that look “budget.” We love working with local artisans who bring flexibility, faster fixes, and quality. For this project, we teamed up with a millworker in New Hampshire, enjoy their beautiful, unique craftsmanship.

An original marble fireplace in a Boston brownstone sits beneath a modern mirror, paired with mid-century furniture and contemporary art.

There’s something magical about fireplaces in historic New England homes. They’re not just spots to warm up—they’re like time machines wrapped in marble, brick and tile. Each one is an architectural gem, full of charm and stories from centuries past. So, grab a seat (preferably near a fire) and let’s take a little journey through some of the most captivating and cozy fireplaces we’ve had the pleasure of reviving.

Custom oak pantry cabinets designed by a Boston kitchen designer, featuring hand-finished hardware and Ann Sacks mosaic tile flooring.

Welcome to Fall/Winter—also known as the season of the sticks for New England homes (cue Noah Kahan).  The magical time of year when boots come in caked with mud, sticks find their way into every crevice, and your once-organized space looks like the aftermath of a nature hike. Let’s talk about how this humble room can be your first defense against the chaos and maybe even look good doing it.

Family room in a classic brownstone with grasscloth walls, custom furniture, leather ottoman, and original marble fireplace by a Boston interior designer.

If you’re a brownstone lover, you know the charm: intricate plaster moldings, original details, and vintage fireplaces. In this South End project, we celebrated a historic brownstone renovation while designing a layout for modern living. With en-suite bedrooms, a luxurious primary suite, and a cozy guest suite, this home blends history and function. As a Boston interior designer, we honored the past while creating a fresh, livable space.
